We advocate for the UK’s net zero industries of the future.

Specifically, we research and push politicians to enact policies that boost net zero product exports.

Net zero is an important long-term economic opportunity for the UK.

We will miss that opportunity if low-carbon industries can’t thrive because they don’t have a supportive regulations, for example if they are undercut by high-carbon imports.

CleanTrade is a non-profit founded to make the case for UK politicians to act to secure that opportunity.

Trade policies on high-carbon imports can boost the investment case for low-carbon industries, make the UK’s supply chains more resilient to fossil fuel price shocks, and send a market signal through supply chains around the world to decarbonise.

In 2022 and 2023, we produced research and were covered in the press making the case for the UK government to boost low-carbon industry by introducing a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), a carbon price on imports of industrial goods such as steel and fertiliser.

In December 2023, the then-Government committed to introduce a CBAM in 2027, a move followed by the new Government, the Labour Party, which in June 2024 announced its support for a CBAM in its election manifesto.
